Ladli Laxmi Yojana

The Ladli Laxmi Yojana, launched in 2007 by the Madhya Pradesh Government, empowers economically disadvantaged girl children. It offers financial security through National Savings Certificates and phased assistance for education.

In India, there are several child plans available to parents, and a special one from these is the Ladli Laxmi Yojana. It is like a helping hand for families when a baby girl is born. This plan brings happiness and support to their lives. As the girl grows up, the plan gives her some money and helps her become strong and independent.

Ladli Laxmi Yojana is not just a plan; it is a way for everyone to show that girls are important and can achieve great things. It is like a big hug from the country, saying, "We believe in you and want to see you succeed!"

In this blog, we will learn how the Ladli Laxmi Yojana is not merely a scheme; it is a symphony of dreams realised, a testament to a nation's unwavering belief in equality and opportunity.

So, let us get started!

What is the Ladli Laxmi Yojana Scheme?

The Laxmi Ladli Yojana, launched on May 2ne, 2007, is a government initiative in Madhya Pradesh. It was introduced by Mr Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the then Chief Minister of the state.

This program gained popularity and was later adopted by several other states across the country.

The scheme is aimed at helping girls born after January 1st, 2006, from low-income families. These families should either not pay taxes, or the girls must be orphans to receive the benefits provided by the scheme.

Key Objectives of the Ladli Laxmi Yojana

The Ladli Laxmi Yojana has several key objectives:

  • Promoting Girl Child Welfare: The primary objective is to promote the welfare of girl children, ensuring they receive equal opportunities and support for their development.
  • Financial Security: The scheme aims to provide financial security to girls from economically disadvantaged families, helping them overcome financial barriers in education and other essential needs.
  • Empowering Girls: By providing financial assistance at various life stages, the scheme empowers girls to pursue their aspirations and lead independent lives.
  • Encouraging Education: Ladli Laxmi Yojana encourages families to invest in their daughters' education by providing financial incentives linked to educational milestones.
  • Fighting Gender Bias: It strives to combat gender discrimination and promote the value and importance of girl children in society.
  • Reducing Child Marriage: By offering financial incentives tied to age milestones, the scheme discourages early marriages and encourages girls to delay marriage until they are of legal age.
  • Supporting Orphaned Girls: The scheme extends its benefits to orphaned girls, providing additional support and resources.
  • Economic Upliftment: By providing financial assistance, the Ladli Laxmi Yojana contributes to the economic upliftment of families, especially those in lower income brackets.
  • Spreading Awareness: The program also aims to raise awareness about the rights and well-being of girl children in society.
  • Replicating Success: The Ladli Laxmi Yojana's success in Madhya Pradesh has prompted other states to adopt similar schemes, spreading its positive impact nationwide.

Benefits of the Ladli Laxmi Yojana

The monetary benefits offered under the Ladli Laxmi Yojana vary depending on a girl's life stage.

  • Under the Ladli Laxmi Yojana, the state government takes an active step in securing the future of the girl child. This is achieved by purchasing National Saving Certificates, each valued at ₹6,000 annually for five years, ensuring steady financial backing.
  • Upon admission to the 6th standard, an initial sum of ₹2,000 is bestowed upon the eligible girl, followed by an additional ₹4,000 when she advances to the 9th standard. This financial support continues to grow with her educational journey, as she receives ₹7,500 upon entering the 11th standard.
  • A monthly stipend of ₹200 is provided during her higher secondary education, offering a regular infusion of financial aid. This consistent support encourages her pursuit of higher education and skill development.
  • As she approaches adulthood, a significant milestone awaits. At age 21, the remaining amount, approximately ₹1 lakh, is presented to her. This substantial sum is a powerful tool in empowering her to forge her path towards a brighter, more secure future.

Eligibility Criteria to Avail the Ladli Laxmi Scheme

For Normal Cases:

  • The girl child must have been born on or after January 1, 2006.
  • She should be registered at the local Anganwadi centre.
  • The parents should be residents of Madhya Pradesh.
  • The parents should not be paying income tax*.
  • Family planning measures must have been adopted after the second child's birth.
  • In cases where a family has two or fewer children, family planning should have been adopted after the second child's birth. If the first child is a girl, benefits will be provided without the requirement of family planning. However, the parents must adopt family planning measures for the second girl child.

For Special Cases

  • In families with a maximum of two children, if either the mother or father has passed away, registration can be done until the girl child is 5. In such cases, if the individual remarries and already has two children, the daughter born from the second marriage will not be eligible for the scheme's benefits.
  • If three girls are born simultaneously during the first delivery, all three will receive the scheme's benefits.
  • The scheme will also include girls born to women prisoners in jail.
  • The scheme's benefits will be extended to a girl child born to a rape victim or any girl child in need.
  • District collectors have the authority to approve cases where family planning was not adopted due to health-related reasons for up to two years instead of one.
  • In special cases, the district collector will carefully evaluate and approve or reject applications received after the designated time frame. Applications must be submitted by the Superintendent of the Orphanage/Protection Home within one year of admission to the Orphanage before the girl child turns five or within one year of adoption by the adoptive parents.
