What is Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA Card)?


Launched on September 27, 2021, the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission (ABDM) is a digital healthcare initiative that aims to create, develop, and strengthen India’s digital healthcare infrastructure.

By integrating the user’s medical records and creating a single-point and safe access, the initiative allows the user to share these details with healthcare centres and medical professionals across India. Users can also control the use of their healthcare records, and access is subject to consent.

Benefits of the ABHA card

Under the Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission, you can access the health benefits of the Ayushman Bharat Yojana scheme with your ABHA card. This feature is available for all, Indian citizens who want to avail of healthcare assistance and benefits with their ABHA card.
 

Some benefits you can access under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana scheme with your ABHA card are:           

  • The healthcare and medical services provided under the scheme are free of cost up to ₹5 Lakhs in empanelled state government and private hospitals with an Ayushman Bharat Health Account..
  • One of the main benefits of this scheme is that 3 days of pre-hospitalization and 15 days of post-hospitalisation expenses are covered by the Government of India.
  • The cost is covered under the highest package in case of multiple procedures. In the case of a second and third procedure, the coverage offered will be 50% and 25%, respectively.
  • The scheme covers the treatment cost of oncology and chemotherapy for 50 types of cancer. However, the medical and surgical packages cannot be covered under one instance.
  • Even follow-up treatments can be covered under the Ayushman Bharat scheme.
  • Both insured individuals and beneficiaries can avail of cashless facilities and admission services under the Ayushman Bharat Yojana scheme with their ABHA card.

Other General Benefits Under an ABHA Card:

  • Available to all Indian citizens and creates a unique healthcare ID across different healthcare providers. This includes all SC/ST Category Citizens.
  • Link your healthcare benefits from public health programmes and insurance schemes to your unique ABHA number.

Why Do You Need to Create an ABHA Digital Health ID Card?

  • Digitised Health Records

    The ABHA digital health ID card allows you to easily access and track your health records in a digital format and share these records with any healthcare system through your ABHA registration.

  • Access to Doctors

    With the Healthcare Professional Registry (HPR) - a database of licenced medical professionals, you can securely get in touch with verified and qualified doctors, medical examiners, and other healthcare professionals and avail of medical consultations when needed.

  • Personal Health Records

    Maintain and link your personal health records with the digital ABHA Address (Health ID) card, thus keeping track of all your medical history, including treatments and consultations.

  • Consent

    No one can gain access to or see your medical data without your consent. You can also revoke access - the most important benefit of the ABHA digital health card.

  • Security

    The digital platform is secured by a robust encryption system and other digital security measures. Further, you can control who has access to your medical information.

  • Voluntary Activation and De-activation

    Having an ABHA health ID card is not mandatory. You can choose to register for the facility or erase your information from the ABHA database if you want to opt out of this facility.

  • Add a Nominee

    Once you have a health card, you will also be able to include a nominee for your Ayushman Bharat Health Account (ABHA). This facility is still in progress and will be available soon.

  • Child ABHA

    You can create an ABHA digital health card for your child and maintain a medical history record starting from birth. However, this facility is still under development.

How To Apply for ABHA Health ID Card Registration Online?
 

You can apply for your ABHA digital health card online using your Aadhaar card. 
 

If your Aadhar card is linked to your mobile number, you can use it to generate your ABHA health ID and receive an OTP on your mobile number to verify the application. If your mobile number and Aadhar are not linked, request help from an Ayushman Bharat Digital Mission participating office.

Who is eligible for an Ayushman card?

You can avail of the Ayushman card if your household is listed in the Socio-Economic and Caste Census (SECC) database and if you are an active Rashtriya Swasthya Bima Yojana (RSBY) cardholder.

Eligibility Criteria for Rural Users

  • Any household without a male or adult earning member between 16-59 years of age.

  • Households with one disabled member but no healthy adult.

  • Households with no members between 16-59 years of age.

  • Households without land earning the main portion of their income through manual labour.

  • Families living in one room with kutcha walls and roofs made of grass, bamboo, mud, etc.

  • Families earning a livelihood through manual scavenging.

Eligibility Criteria for Urban Users

  • Domestic workers/gardeners/security guards

  • Beggars/ragpickers

  • Street vendors/cobblers

  • Home-based artisans/ tailors/craftsmen

  • Sanitation workers/plumber/ washerman

Is the Ayushman Bharat card free?

Registering and getting an ABHA card is completely free of cost.

What is the difference between PMJAY and ABHA?

The Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY) is an initiative to improve and secure the livelihoods of people from economically weaker sections of society. The Aarogya Bharat Health Account or ABHA initiative is meant to encourage and help people create a digital record of their medical information.

Is it compulsory to register for an ABHA card?

No, registering for the ABHA card is not compulsory.

Is it possible to revoke access to my health data after access has been granted?

Yes, the ABDM allows you to revoke access or delete all your medical data even after you have granted your healthcare professional access to the record.

How does the Ayushman card work?

Is the Arogya card and the Ayushman card the same?

No, there is a difference between the Arogya and the Ayushman cards. The ABHA card allows the economically weaker sections of society to access cashless medical care in a list of hospitals public or private hospitals.

On the other hand, the Arogya card is part of the Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana, which aims to provide health insurance coverage to the economically weaker sections of society with ₹5 lakhs per family every year for medical care and hospitalisation.

Can we claim medical bills with the Ayushman card?

If you are an Ayushman Bharat Health Account beneficiary, you will be eligible for the ABHA health card. This card can help you avail of cashless treatment and hospitalisation under the scheme.
