Health Benefits of Vrikshasana - Pose Steps to perform

One of the many benefit-rendering poses of yoga, Vrikshasana is beneficial to the mind and body. The yogic pose improves focus and body balance. Additionally, it is one of the keys to a healthier body and mind.

The quest for a calm mind and healthy body is pacing faster than ever at present. We have become so negligent towards our mind and body, giving all our energy to work. While most of us don't have the time or determination to hit the gym every single day, Yoga comes to the rescue. Yoga is not a Western concept and has its roots established in India. It is an amalgamation of multiple poses that tries to build a connection between the mind and the body.

Right from Suryanamaskar to Shavasana, Yoga is a holistic solution to our need to be mentally and physically fit. And one such beneficial yoga pose is the Vrikshasana. It is also known as the tree pose since Vriksha means tree and asana translates to pose.

In this blog, we will showcase a purview of the multiple health benefits of yoga especially Vrikshasana. Read this blog till the end to avail yourself of a step-by-step guide on how to perform the pose correctly.

What is the Vrikshasana yoga pose?

As stated earlier, Vrikshasana translates to tree pose or tree posture. It indicates that one must replicate a tree's steady and graceful position. This standing yogic pose has evolved from ancient sages' Tapasya or meditative pose.

One can ascertain that this posture is ancient from the depiction at an old rock temple in Mamallapuram. The rock temple showcases a carving in the same pose as the Vrikshasana and dates back to the seventh century CE.

This also indicates that Vrikshasana and its benefits have been passed down from generation to generation. And remain relevant today.

What are the Vrikshasana yoga benefits?

Like any other yoga posture, Vrikshasana is not just a stance but offers multiple mind and body benefits.

  1. It improves the balance and stability of the body

The Vrikshasana posture requires the body to be balanced on one foot. This posture improves the body's stability and its sense of equilibrium. Moreover, the power of balance and stability gained through Vrikshasana is not only physical. The advantages of Vrikshasana extend to the emotional and mental aspects of one's life. Hence, the pose induces a state of mental balance and harmony.

  2. The posture strengthens the hips and legs

The essence of Vrikshasana is that it is a one-legged standing pose. All the body weight comes down to the ankles, thighs, and calves during the pose. Hence, the posture strengthens these body parts. It also opens up the hips. This benefit makes Vrikshasana one of the best postures for people who sit for longer periods.

  3. The asana improves the functioning of the nervous system

We know that Vrikshasana improves balance. The balance improvement further leads to enhancement in the functioning of the nervous system. This, in turn, makes the neutral connections stronger. It boosts one's cognitive abilities like comprehension and problem-solving.

  4. The posture enhances personal patience and calm levels

The Vrikshasana pose inculcates a deep sense of patience and inner calmness. The steadiness and calmness increase when a person performing the pose maintains it for a record time. This asana is one of the best poses to release stress and avail of mental regeneration. Have you had a tiring day at work? Five minutes of Vrikshasana will give you the inner calm and stability you require.

  5. The asana improves spinal health and body posture

The majority of people who are desk workers suffer from back problems. Owing to a poor back posture. While work hours cannot be compromised, one can resort to Vrikshasana. The pose entails standing tall like a tree. The posture aligns the spine and improves the body posture. Additionally, Vrikshasana also makes the vertebral column stronger. It helps diminish back ache and discomfort.

What is the right way to perform Vrikshasana? Steps of Vrikshasana explored:

Generally, the right way to do Vrikshasana is to stand upright on one foot. While it might seem like an easy yoga pose, it is definitely challenging for beginners. And for people who have weak calves.

Remember, performing the asana correctly is more important than holding the pose for long intervals. If the pose is not performed correctly, it can have an adverse effect on the body. And may bring no visible positive results as well.

Here is a step-by-step guide on how to perform the Vrikshasana procedure correctly:

  • Stand straight with your arms by the side of your body.
  • Now, bend the right knee and place your right foot between the thigh and knee region of your left foot. Make sure that the sole of the foot is placed flatly. And that it is firm near the root of the thigh area.
  • Ensure your left leg doesn't bend and is straight. Now, proceed to find your balance.
  • It is okay to sway a little here until you don't get a hold of the pose.
  • Once you have balanced your stance, take deep breaths. Raise your arms from the side over to your head.
  • Bring your palms together, forming a Namaste mudra or the folded-hands position.
  • Maintain a steady gaze by looking straight. A steady gaze enhances a steady balance.
  • After holding the pose for a few minutes as per your body performance, exhale slowly.
  • Bring your hands down from both the sides and release the right leg.
  • Repeat the Vrikshasana pose with the left leg on the right thigh.

Ensure your spine is straight throughout the process. Take long breaths and ensure the body becomes more relaxed with each exhalation. Make sure you have a gentle smile on your face throughout the asana.

Conclusion

Vrikshasana is a pose that enhances strength, balance, and mental well-being. Its benefits are present in the mental and physical realms, making it the ideal holistic posture for overall betterment.

Incorporating Vrikshasana into your daily routine will offer multiple benefits and improve your quality of life. Remember that the asana doesn't render quick results and will require perseverance. However, you will notice a difference between regular and prolonged practice.
