What is PAN (Permanent Account Number)?
 

The Permanent Account Number (PAN) is a unique 10-digit alphanumeric identity provided to every taxpayer in India. It is issued to the taxpayer by the Income Tax Department. The primary purpose of allotting a PAN card is to track financial transactions with a taxable component. Therefore, every taxpayer must have a PAN card to validate the transactions to avoid any discrepancies in the future.

There are different types of PAN cards for various categories of taxpayers such as the resident Indians, companies, etc., The issued PAN card is valid for a lifetime. The details, such as name, contact address, etc., can be changed on the PAN card through an online request by providing the essential documents.

The Income Tax Department has introduced online and offline facilities to help applicants check their PAN card status. It is important for the applicants to check their PAN card status to understand if the PAN card application has been received, accepted, and processed for dispatch. In addition, it will help them resolve any issues and ensure the PAN card is issued timely.

Methods To Check PAN Card Status
 

There are two different methods to check PAN card status online. Here is a detail explaining the steps.

NSDL PAN Status

The applicant can check the PAN card status online on the NSDL website (now called Protean).

  1. Visit the NSDL website to check PAN card status.
  2. Select the Application Type from the drop-down menu - PAN - New/ Change Request.
  3. Provide the 15-digit acknowledgement number.
  4. Enter the captcha code.
  5. Click on the 'Submit' button.

The system will display the PAN card status on the screen. The NSDL PAN status check is one of the simplest methods if the user has the acknowledgement number.

In case of any discrepancy or further clarification, individuals can contact the NSDL by writing to them at info@nsdl.co.in or calling them on their helpline number (020) 272 18080.

UTI PAN Status Check

The PAN card status can be checked by the applicant using the UTIITSL website.

  1. Visit the UTIITSL website to check your PAN card status.
  2. Provide the Application Coupon number.
  3. Provide the PAN number if applied for change or correction in the PAN card.
  4. Provide the Date of Birth. (For the other categories of taxpayers, provide the applicable Date of Incorporation/Partnership or Trust Deed/Agreement/ Formation of Body of Individuals/Association of Persons).
  5. Enter the Captcha code.
  6. Click on the 'Submit' button.

The system will display the UTI PAN status on the screen.

PAN card status check by Name and Date of Birth
 

The NSDL website allows individuals to check PAN card status online without using the acknowledgement number. It is a PAN card status check by Name and Date of Birth.

  1. Visit the website for the NSDL PAN status check.
  2. Provide the 'Application Type' as PAN - New/ Change Request.
  3. Choose the option to provide the Name and fill out the details of Last Name/ Surname, First Name, and Middle Name as mentioned in the application form.
  4. Provide the Date of Birth. (For the other categories of taxpayers, provide the applicable Date of Incorporation/Partnership or Trust Deed/Agreement/ Formation of Body of Individuals/Association of Persons).
  5. Click on the 'Submit' button.

The system will display the details regarding PAN card status on the screen.

It is important to note that individuals can utilize the PAN card status check by Name and Date of Birth option after 24 hours of submitting the application online.


Alternate Methods to Check PAN Card Status
 

Apart from online services, individuals can check their PAN card status in the following ways.

  1. Call - Applicants can call the TIN call centre services on 020 27218080 and provide the 15-digit acknowledgement number to know the PAN card status.
  2. SMS - Applicants can also check their PAN card status by sending ‘NSDLPAN’ to ‘57575’, followed by the 15-digit acknowledgement number. They will receive an SMS detailing the current status of the PAN card application.


Steps To Check e-PAN Card Status
 

e-PAN is the PAN card digitally signed and issued in electronic format. It is based on the e-KYC information of Aadhaar. The PAN card status check by Aadhaar Number is a simple process online.

The applicants will receive the PAN in PDF format, free of cost.

e-PAN has the same value as the physical PAN card. It requires the Aadhaar card details, and the corresponding linked mobile number.

Steps for e-PAN card status check by Aadhaar Number:

  1. Visit the e-filing website for Income Tax.
  2. Click on 'Continue' against the Check Status/Download PAN option.
  3. Provide the 12-digit Aadhaar number.
  4. Click on the 'Continue' button.

The system will display the PAN card details on the screen. The mobile number of the applicants should be linked to their Aadhaar for the OTP verification.


Steps To Check PAN Card Payment Status
 

The applicants who have applied for the PAN card by paying the applicable fees using a credit card, debit card, or internet banking can check the PAN transaction status using the following steps:

  1. Visit the NSDL website (now referred to as Protean).
  2. Click the 'PAN' option from the 'Services' tab.
  3. Choose the 'Know Status of Your Credit Card/ debit card/ net banking transaction for online application' option.
  4. Provide the transaction number or the 15-digit acknowledgement number.
  5. Provide the Name and Date of Birth. (For the other categories of taxpayers, provide the applicable Date of Incorporation/Partnership or Trust Deed/Agreement/ Formation of Body of Individuals/Association of Persons).
  6. Click on the 'Show Status' button.

The system will display the details of the payment status.
