How to Apply for a PAN Card Online and Offline in India?

A Permanent Account Number (PAN) card is an essential document to carry out various activities like opening a bank account, using mobile wallets, filing income tax returns, etc. You can apply for a PAN card online or offline, whichever mode you find convenient.

A Permanent Account Number is a 10-digit code issued by the Income Tax Department of India. It links your financial transactions with the department and is allocated to you in the form of a PAN card. The PAN card includes your name, photograph, date of birth, and unique PAN number.

Now that you know what exactly a PAN card is, keep reading to know how to check PAN card status and learn in detail about the online and offline methods for applying for a PAN card.

How to Apply for a PAN Card Online?

You can apply for a PAN card online via the NSDL (now Protean) or UTI Infrastructure Technology and Services Limited (UTIITSL) websites. Both portals are authorised to issue PANs and make changes or corrections on behalf of the Income Tax Department.

Here is the process of how to apply PAN card online:

Step 1: Visit the official portal of NSDL or UTIITSL.

Step 2: Click “New PAN”

Step 3: Choose PAN Card Form 49A (The form is for Indian citizens, NRIs, NREs, and OCIs).

Step 4: Fill in the form details. Make sure you read the instructions before filling out the PAN card  application form.

Step 5: Now pay the required processing fee. You can pay the fees through demand draft, net banking, or credit/debit card.

Step 6: Once you have submitted the PAN card application form and the processing fee, you will receive an acknowledgement slip with an acknowledgement number.

Step 7: You will have to e-sign the application by using Aadhaar OTP authentication. You can also send the application with the required documents to the NSDL PAN/UTIITSL office through courier. Make sure you do this within 15 days of the submission of the Form 49A.

Step 8: Your PAN number will be verified once your acknowledgement form is forwarded to and received by the NSDL/UTIITSL office. After verification by the respective office, your card will be generated.

Step 9: You will receive the PAN card at the mentioned address within 15 working days.

How to Apply for a PAN Card Offline?

You can also apply for a PAN card through a district-level PAN agency. Here is how you can apply PAN card offline:

Step 1: Download the PAN application Form 49A from the NSDL/UTIITSL website. You can also get a physical copy from agents of these entities.

Step 2: Fill out the form with the correct details and attach the required documents.

Step 3: Submit the duly filled form with attached documents to the NSDL/UTIITSL. You will have to pay a processing fee while submitting the form.

Step 4: Your PAN card will be sent to the mentioned address within 15 working days.

Documents Required for PAN Card

Here is the list of documents required for PAN card offline and online:

  • Identity proof
  • Date of birth proof
  • Address proof

Registration certificate in case of firms, companies, Hindu Undivided Families (HUF), and  Association of Persons.

PAN Card Application Fees

The PAN card application fee is ₹93 excluding GST@ for an Indian communication address while it is ₹864 excluding GST for a foreign communication address. You can pay the application fee through your credit/debit card, net banking, or demand draft.

How to Make Changes in PAN Card?

You can apply for changes or corrections to your existing PAN through the NSDL/UTIITSL websites. All you need is to choose the correction option or tab. Next, specify the correction you want to make such as name or date of birth. Documents to support the corrections are also needed. Here is the step-by-step process of making updates to your PAN:

Step 1: Fill in the details in the application form for the corrections on the NSDL/UTIITSL website.

Step 2: Now pay the PAN card application fees. You can pay through demand draft, net banking, or credit/debit card. Save and print the acknowledgement number generated.

Step 3: Once your form and PAN card application fees are submitted, you need to send the supporting documents via post or courier to the respective office.

Step 4: After receiving and verifying the documents supporting changes in your PAN, NSDL/UTIITSL will process your application.

How to Apply for a Lost PAN Card?

You can apply for a lost or stolen PAN Card through the NSDL or UTIITSL websites. Visit the website and choose the option of reprinting.

Furnish the required details and pay the fee.  Once you have applied for a lost PAN card, NSDL/UTIITSL may take some time to print and send your card.

Wrapping Up

PAN card application is quite simple, especially when you do so via an online method. All you need is to fill out and submit the online form with the processing fee. You can send copies of necessary documents through post to NSDL or UTIITSL for verification.

Once your application is submitted, you can check your PAN card status through your application number.  This can help you confirm that your application is received, accepted, and processed.
