Missing Breakfast Is the Worst Health Decision We've Been Making As A Generation. Here's Why!

26-April-2022 |

One of the hotly contested questions in the world of nutrition has always been – if breakfast actually is the most crucial meal of the day? If experts are anything to go by, then it certainly is. It is said that those who eat their breakfast right tend to not indulge in overeating for the rest of the day. This is one of the main reasons why skipping breakfast is a mistake.

Now you must be wondering as to how skipping breakfast is bad for you? Since it is the first meal of the day that we eat after nearly 10 to 12 hours of fasting, it gears us up for the day by fuelling us with enough nutrition needed to get started.

As per a new study by the European Journal Of Preventive Cardiology, unhealthy lifestyle habits like late dinners and skipped breakfasts increased the chances of a second heart attack and early death by four to five times. The study was conducted on patients suffering from a serious kind of heart attack condition called STEMI (ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction. Out of all the enrolee’s of the study, 51% were skipping breakfasts, 51% were having late dinners, and 41% were doing both.

While busy schedules have often pushed us away from a healthy lifestyle, courtesy of a hectic lifestyle most of us have taken the idea of a bad lifestyle to a whole new level.

Skipping Breakfast: An Unhealthy Mistake

Is skipping breakfast good or bad for weight loss? Nutritionists are often asked this question and the answer to it is that it certainly is bad for your weight loss journey. But, apart from not helping you in weight loss, it jeopardises your body in more ways than you realise. Here are 5 reasons how skipping breakfast is bad for you.

  • Increases Weight

Missing meals, especially, breakfasts can get you super hungry. In the morning, after hours of fasting, if you don’t eat breakfast, the metabolism slows down due to which we feel the hunger pangs that make us eat more than what we intend to eat, thus contributing to weight gain.

  • High Cholesterol

Skipping breakfast is a mistake because it can lead to an increase in your cholesterol levels as well. Research conducted by the Journal Of the American College Of Cardiology in 2017 showed that people who missed their breakfast had twice as many chances to have atherosclerosis or blocked arteries. Interestingly, the research also suggested that people who skipped breakfasts were living an unhealthier lifestyle, indulging in smoking and alcohol consumption.

  • Can Cause Diabetes

Several studies have suggested that a missed breakfast is linked to high blood glucose levels. In fact, it increases a person’s blood sugar levels by 37%.

  • Decreases Concentration Level

Certain foods that we eat in breakfast boost our brain, improve our short-term memory and make our brain sharper and stronger. A low-fat and protein-rich breakfast with the right amount of fruits and vegetables helps you concentrate and stay productive throughout the day.

  • Leads To Lack Of Energy

Breakfast, as the name suggests, is meant to break your night-long fast. Skipping breakfast might not be the right thing since it robs you of your energy and leaves you feeling drained throughout the day.

Is Skipping Breakfast Good Or Bad For Weight Loss?

Another fad diet – intermittent fasting – has gained momentum. The introduction of this diet has led to more and more people missing their breakfasts, not knowing that it might not even help them in the achievement of their weight goal.

If the question of ‘is skipping breakfast good or bad for weight loss’ often crosses your mind then let us answer that for you. Missing your breakfast is absolutely not helpful in your weight loss journey. Skipping breakfast makes you crave more food, especially junk, and it also intensifies the hunger pangs. Both of these lead to overeating, eventually leading to weight gain and not weight loss.

Missed breakfasts also speed up the ageing process. Since the morning time requires nutrients in your body, a dearth of the same can make your skin look saggy and wrinkly in the long run. You are what you eat, remember? So, in order to stay healthy, inside out, it is important for you to have this most important meal of the day called breakfast.

Importance Of Breakfast For Kids

Mealtimes turning into world wars is the story of every household with kids. Although kids hate to eat their meals, the first meal of the day is worth fighting this war for. Since children are several times more active than us in a day, when they wake up in the morning, breakfast is essential for them to regain their energy. A missed breakfast means a cranky and tired child during their school time, which will lead to a lack of concentration and a hard time focusing on the important things taught in school.

Conclusion

For your mind, brain, and body to function properly, you need to have a balanced breakfast. It should be stacked with protein, fibre, and healthy fats that kickstart your day on a happy and healthy note. It also helps in building a foundation to practice good habits the entire day. When you start the day right, you tend to be more focused and positive about building a better lifestyle, hence practicing good habits the entire day.

So, now that you know that skipping breakfast is a mistake, do eat your breakfast right and start your day on a nutritious note!
